When I graduated pharmacy school, I already had a doctorate, a career, and the ability to earn a great living as a pharmacist.

Then I decided to go back to school and become a physician.

It meant taking the MCAT, applying to medical school, giving up years of pharmacist income, going back into the classroom, taking board exams, spending countless hours in the hospital, and essentially starting over professionally.

And now, as a fourth-year medical student (as of 2026-2027) approaching the end of that journey, I realize something:

There are a lot of pharmacists who have quietly wondered whether they should do the same thing.

Honestly since I’ve started sharing my story on social media, I’ve had tons of pharmacists reaching out to me to ask me questions…

Who Am I?

I’m Michael C. Ogbonna, PharmD, a licensed pharmacist and fourth-year medical student.

Before medical school, I went through pharmacy school, earned my PharmD, became a licensed pharmacist, and worked in the profession.

But during that journey, I realized I wanted to pursue medicine.

So I went back.

I took the MCAT.

Applied to medical school.

Got accepted.

Went from pharmacist back to student.

Went through the preclinical years.

Took Step 1.

Entered the hospital for clinical rotations.

Studied & took Step 2.

And now I’m a fourth-year medical student preparing to apply for residency (as of 2026-2027)

I’m not writing this newsletter because I think my path is the path everyone should take.

In fact, I hope some people read this newsletter and decide not to go to medical school.

Because this is an enormous decision.

It costs years of your life.

It can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It affects your career, your finances, your relationships, and your family.

You deserve to make that decision with as much information as possible.

And if my experience can make that decision even a little clearer for another pharmacist, pharmacy student, or nontraditional applicant, then documenting this journey is worth it.
